Today, I’ve reached a significant milestone: I’ve surpassed 50,000 words in the book I’m currently writing. This new work focuses on Japanese military and civil medals, covering all Imperial Orders and war medals since 1875. The book also covers medals issued by the Japanese Red Cross, commemorative medals, and wound badges. Over the past few weeks, I’ve made great progress, and while there's still a long way to go, the finish line is finally in sight.
My first book, Tobacco of the Emperor, was just over 27,000 words, but I’m expecting this new book to be at least twice that length. It's packed with information and explores numerous topics that previous works have overlooked. The process has been a fascinating learning experience. The research has allowed me to dive deep into Japanese mythology, study the lives of individuals who shaped Japan from the 19th century onward, and examine hundreds of Japanese medals and awards—many of which are true works of art.
I’ve also had the privilege of collaborating with renowned museums and universities worldwide in my research. I've been granted permission to use stunning Japanese woodblock prints and photographs from museum collections. In fact, I’ve even been invited to a museum in Europe to discuss my book. Collectors from around the globe have also been incredibly supportive and have served as invaluable resources.
Over the next several months I will be posting more updates, news, and potentially sneak peaks.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far, its been a great time and I’m looking forward to continuing the writing process.
Patrick.
